Open bite
Causes: Genetics (narrow jaw, tooth arrangement), habits such as thumb sucking, increase overjet, dental injury - tooth becoming pushed or "embedded" in bone.
Treatments: Invisalign or braces treatment, composite bonding/ veneers, porcelain veneers and jaw surgery.
An open bite is present, if when you bite your back teeth together, there is a visible gap between your top and bottom incisor teeth in the front of your smile. Correcting an open bite will allow you to have a much fuller , more aesthetic and "elegant" smile, but also allow your front teeth to meet, which will vastly improve how you eat and function using your front teeth.
The best way to correct an open bite is usually using Invisalign or braces. In more severe cases with large open bites, jaw surgery may be needed to fully correct the bite, however improvement can generally be made even in these cases using Invisalign or braces.
If minor corrections are needed, composite bonding/veneers or porcelain veneers can sometimes be used to perfect the smile and correct the open bite.
Open bite here was corrected using Invisalign braces. Notice how correcting this gives a much fuller smile as we now see more of the top front teeth. Patient also realised that she can now eat foods she could never eat before which would require her to bite well with her front teeth.
